Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by seizures. At Barnes-Jewish Hospital, we understand what a significant impact epilepsy can have on your life. Our goal is to help you gain optimal control over epilepsy and seizures.

About a third of the epilepsy patients in the St. Louis region are seen at Barnes-Jewish. Using the latest technologies, we monitor more than 30 patients a month at our state-of-the-art, high-volume epilepsy monitoring unit (EMU). Our epileptologists and other specialists are highly trained and equipped to treat the most difficult cases of epilepsy.

From diagnosis to treatment and recovery, we offer advanced care for epilepsy. A coordinator will walk you through each step of the process. Continual research and support for our patients allows us to provide exceptional care.

Why Choose Us for Epilepsy Treatment?

Barnes-Jewish Hospital is recognized as a national Epilepsy Center of Excellence, as well as a Level 4 Epilepsy Center. At the time of recognition, we were one of only three epilepsy centers in the nation to receive specific Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) certification for treatment of epilepsy.

As pioneers in epilepsy treatment, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was one of the first hospitals in the United States to use brain surgery on a regular basis to treat patients with seizure disorders that were unresponsive to medications. Today, we continue to be leaders in our field, equipped with the latest tools, such as brain laser surgery, video EEG and intracranial electrode placement.

Partnering with Washington University School of Medicine, we participate in clinical trials to continue improving our current treatment options, and test promising new treatments.

The advances our team of neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists and epilepsy nurses continues to adopt have made it possible to control, and even permanently stop, disabling seizure disorders, allowing you to lead a normal life.
