Goldfarb Nursing School Dean Appointed Next President of the American Nurses Credentialing Center

ST. LOUIS – The American Nurses Association (ANA) Board of Directors has appointed Michael L. Evans, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, the Maxine Clark and Bob Fox Dean and Professor at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College, the next president of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the world’s largest nurse credentialing organization. 

He will begin his two-year term on July 1, 2011. As president, Evans will serve as chief spokesperson on behalf of ANCC and will lead the board in setting goals, policy, and long-range plans for the credentialing center. 

A subsidiary of the ANA, the ANCC provides nursing certification in various advanced practice specialties, offers continuing education programs, and designates Magnet status to hospitals that demonstrate the highest standards in professional nursing practice. 

Evans has led Barnes-Jewish College since 2006. Previously, he was in hospital nursing administration for 25 years before his career bridged to academic nursing administration. He came to St. Louis from Dallas where he was with Texas Health Resources for 11 years, first as Chief Nurse Executive of Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and then as the system’s first Chief Learning Officer. In addition to other management and clinical education programs, he led the creation of an innovative educational partnership to offer nursing education to system employees. Prior to joining Texas Health Resources in 1995, Evans was Chief Nursing Officer at St. David’s Health Care System in Austin, Texas for seven years and Chief Nursing Officer at Northwest Texas Health Care System in Amarillo, Texas for six years. He has served as adjunct faculty in a variety of colleges and universities throughout his career. 

Evans holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Texas Tech University, a Diploma in Nursing from Northwest Texas Hospital School of Nursing, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Texas A&M University, a Master of Science in Nursing majoring in Nursing Administration and Nursing Education from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. 

Evans served as President of the Texas Nurses Association and was on the board of directors of the American Nurses Association for eight years. He is board certified as Nurse Executive, Advanced by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and is board certified in healthcare management and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Evans is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
