ST. LOUIS - Two new 10-week group weight-loss programs to help people make their New Year’s Resolutions a reality are now offered by the Heart Care Institute in West County.
"Healthy Weighs" teaches participants how to balance healthy food choices and physical activity to succeed at reaching a healthy weight.
The course also teaches participants how to prevent relapse and make short-term goals, and will be led by two registered dietitians
“The program is more of a lifestyle change instead of just a diet,” says Kimberly Milford, registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator at the Heart Care Institute and one of the program’s dietitians. “Our focus is on healthful eating and being active to achieve a healthy weight and decrease participants risk for many chronic diseases."
In addition to "Healthy Weighs," the Heart Care Institute is also offering "Fitness for Women 101," a small class similar to a low-intensity boot camp designed just for women. The class introduces women to both aerobic and resistance training with an emphasis on strength and cardiovascular endurance.
"Healthy Weighs" will take place on Mondays, 9 - 10 a.m. and Wednesdays, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. beginning January 17. A free introductory class will be at 5 p.m., January 5, and "Fitness for Women 101" will be offered Tuesdays, noon - 1 p.m. and 5 - 6 p.m. beginning February 1. Both classes will take place at the Heart Care Institute in Medical Office Building #3 at 1020 N. Mason on the campus of Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. Class size is limited to 15 people to encourage group discussions and to help participants learn from each other.
“'Fitness for Women 101' really is a fun class and we have a great time,” says Tessa Carson, exercise physiologist at the Heart Care Institute and class instructor. “It is geared toward women just starting out or resuming exercise. Participants will gradually progress throughout the 10 weeks, increasing there duration, intensity, and frequency of exercise. Also, there is a discussion/teaching component to the program, with more of that in the first few classes and less toward the last few classes.”
