St. Louis, MO - Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee approves Siteman Cancer Center application to develop outpatient facility in South County. At the November 8 meeting of the Missouri Health Facilities Review Committee, the application of Siteman Cancer Center to develop an outpatient facility in South County received unanimous approval, with one committee member abstaining because of a conflict. The volunteer committee serves as the administrator of the Missouri Certificate of Need Law, an effort to contain costs, improve quality and increase access to health care services across Missouri. The Committee approved the Certificate of Need following a finding by staff that the Siteman Cancer Center application had met all required criteria and that there was need for additional cancer services in South County.

The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, which encompasses the combined cancer-related programs of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, is an international leader in cancer treatment, research, prevention, education and outreach. It is the only cancer center in Missouri and within a 240 mile radius of St. Louis to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute.

The proposed outpatient facility will be developed in the southeast quadrant of I-55 and Butler Hill Road. Earlier this year, the St. Louis County Council approved the rezoning of the site from residential to commercial to facilitate development of the free-standing cancer center that will provide state of the art cancer care for patients in a convenient and comfortable setting. In Phase I, a 40,000 square foot, one story building will be constructed that will house medical oncology & chemotherapy, radiation oncology, cancer surgical subspecialty consultation, laboratory and other cancer support services. All doctors working at the center will be Washington University physicians.

The South County location will be the fourth Siteman Cancer Center facility developed in the St. Louis metropolitan area. The primary Siteman Cancer Center location is adjacent to Barnes-Jewish Hospital on the Washington University Medical Center campus in St. Louis’ Central West End. The other two locations are at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital in Creve Coeur and Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital in St. Charles County.

Siteman Cancer Center is owned and operated by Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a member of BJC HealthCare.
