Barnes-Jewish is the flagship hospital of BJC HealthCare, one of the largest nonprofit health-care organizations in the United States with 13 hospitals, multiple health-care service organizations and nearly 26,000 employees in Missouri and Illinois. BJC Healthcare is the largest employer in Missouri.

Barnes-Jewish is the primary adult teaching hospital of Washington University School of Medicine, one of the top three schools of medicine in the country. The School of Medicine offers four programs leading to the MD degree: a regular four-year program, a five-year program, the MA/MD degrees program, and the MD/PhD degrees program. The combined MD/PhD program is the nation's largest medical scientist training program, dedicated to educating the next generation of physician-scientists.

Washington University Physicians are specialists who are members of the full-time faculty at the School of Medicine. The highly active clinical practice group—one of the largest in the nation—is composed of more than 900 physicians, representing more than 50 specialties and subspecialties in medicine and surgery. Washington University Physicians provide comprehensive medical care at more than 35 clinical office sites throughout the greater St. Louis area.

The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine is an international leader in patient care, cancer research, prevention, education and community outreach and is the only center in Missouri - and within a 240-mile radius of St. Louis - to hold the prestigious Comprehensive Cancer Center designation from the National Cancer Institute. Last year the Siteman Cancer Center treated about 8,000 new cancer patients. In addition, the Siteman Cancer Center offers more than 250 clinical therapeutic studies, including many collaborative efforts with other leading cancer centers throughout the country.

Barnes-Jewish Extended Care, tucked away in a quiet respite of beautiful Clayton, offers both long-term care services as well as a rehabilitation unit. This unit is dedicated to the more critical needs of orthopedic, post-surgical, stroke recovery and other patients requiring continuing medical treatment after or in place of hospitalization.

Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology serves as the Department of Radiology for Washington University School of Medicine; and Mallinckrodt's physicians are on staff at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. These highly-skilled physicians are equipped with highly advanced imaging and computer systems that shift from the use of plain film to 3-D imaging and digital radiology. A premiere research facility, Mallinckrodt combines clinical and basic research, with funding upwards of $20 million annually.

The Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis, a joint venture partnership with BJC Healthcare and HealthSouth and in affiliation with Washington University School of Medicine, is an 96-bed free-standing rehabilitation hospital that offers inpatient, outpatient and day treatment rehabilitation for patients with disabilities such as amputations, stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury and orthopedic concerns.

For more than 100 years, the Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College, formerly the Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing, has been preparing leaders in nursing. All programs offered are fully accredited, which includes:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
    • Upper Division, Accelerated, and RN to BSN Online
  • Master of Science in Nursing
    • Adult Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Adult Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthesia, Nurse Educator, and Nurse Executive
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice/Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing

Because Barnes-Jewish Hospital is an adult hospital, most pediatric care is provided by St. Louis Children’s Hospital, which is located next to Barnes-Jewish Hospital. St. Louis Children’s Hospital has provided specialized care for children for 125 years. Like Barnes-Jewish, St. Louis Children’s Hospital is affiliated with Washington University School of Medicine. In 2005, Child magazine ranked St. Louis Children’s Hospital among the 10 Best children’s hospitals in the country, and third in emergency medicine.
