Nurse Residencies

You’re about to begin your journey in professional nursing. Because we understand the feelings associated with being a new nurse, Barnes-Jewish Hospital offers a BSN Nurse Residency Program to provide new graduates the type of support needed to successfully transition from student nurse to competent and confident professional. In your first year of employment as a new graduate nurse, all BSN and MSN hires will participate in the Nurse Residency Program.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from an accredited BSN or MSN-entry level program within previous six months

  • Employed full-time at Barnes-Jewish Hospital as an RN/GN, according to the hospital policy

  • Current Missouri RN license

  • Commit to active participation in one-year Residency Program

ABOUT THE NURSE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Barnes-Jewish Hospital, receiving nursing’s highest honor as a recently re-designated Magnet hospital, designed a Nurse Residency Program to support post-baccalaureate graduate nurses. This 12-month evidence-based program, developed by the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), bridges the gap between school and professional practice.

THE INNOVATIVE NURSING EXPERIENCE AT BARNES-JEWISH

From your first day of orientation, you’ll experience a support network like no other. At Barnes-Jewish Hospital, our nursing professionals will help guide your growth and development, and provide the level of support you expect from a world-class hospital. Our program structure includes: 

GENERAL HOSPITAL ORIENTATION

  • New Employee Orientation

  • Nursing Orientation

  • Electronic Documentation

SPECIALTY ORIENTATION:

  • Combines didactic instruction with hands-on learning to provide new graduate nurses with the skills and knowledge needed to provide expert nursing care in your chosen specialty

  • Preceptors guide orientation and assist in validating competencies

NURSE RESIDENCY PROGRAM:

  • Monthly, resident-only learning seminars. These four-hour seminars are scheduled work days for residentsSeminars are interactive, provide a support network for new graduates and focus on curricular threads related to National Patient Safety Goals and nursing-sensitive indicators

  • Unit-based preceptors teach skills needed for success in your clinical specialty

  • Participation in an evidence-based practice project

  • Discussion groups led by expert facilitators in a safe, confidential environment

  • Nurse residents receive continuous support throughout their first year of employment

  • Resident data will be collected, analyzed and reported through the UHC Nurse Residency Program national database

  • Residents will be prepared to participate in our Professional Nurse Development Program
