The Medical Staff Association unites the members of the full-time and voluntary faculty of Washington University School of Medicine in a cooperative effort to develop and maintain the highest standard of care for their patients and to collaborate in advancing medical education and research. The Council of the Medical Staff Association consists of 12 members of the voluntary and 12 members of the full-time faculty. Each faculty member is required by the by-laws of the Hospital to pay dues to the Association to support its primary missions of representing the medical staff in the operation of the Hospital and philanthropy.
As a subcommittee of the Medical Executive Committee of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the Council has monthly meetings where topics of interest to the entire physician staff are discussed. The Council acts as patient advocates and offers direct, unfiltered feedback to the administration regarding clinical and related issues.
In addition, the Association funds the Steven Miller, M.D., Scholarship at Washington University School of Medicine, providing a full scholarship for one member of each class, as well as supporting scholarships for the Barnes-Jewish Hospital School of Nursing. These scholarships are awarded to those individuals who meet the rigorous criteria for acceptance but would not otherwise be able to matriculate.
