Smoking causes breathing problems, heart disease and many cancers.
Thousands of chemicals are in cigarette smoke. At least 69 of them cause cancer. Smoking is linked to many types of cancer. Smoking is the cause of 1 out of 3 cancer deaths in this country. Smoking causes 8 in 10 lung cancers.
Smoking causes COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Chronic bronchitis is a type of COPD. Emphysema is a more severe type of COPD. COPD is the number 3 cause of death in the U.S.
Smoking raises the risk for heart and vascular disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in this country. Smoking increases your risk for heart attack and stroke. It increases your risk for blood clots, narrows your arteries, and increases the buildup of cholesterol plaque in the arteries. This permanently narrows them.
Smoking harms people around you who are exposed to your smoke. Children who breathe in your smoke are more likely to get bronchitis, pneumonia, and ear infections. The health effects of secondhand smoke on adults and children are the same as if they smoked themselves. In children with asthma, secondhand smoke increases how often asthma symptoms happen and how severe they are. Exposure to secondhand smoke can also slow the growth of children’s lungs and can cause them to cough, wheeze, and feel breathless. The CDC reports that more than 7,000 non-smokers die each year from lung cancer linked to secondhand smoke.
