Esophagus and Stomach

The esophagus is the tube that carries food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach. The stomach connects the esophagus and the small intestine. It mixes swallowed food with stomach acids to begin digestion and protein absorption. Then it sends the food into the small intestine for further digestion.

Some stomach disorders, such as indigestion or heartburn, can be treated with over-the-counter medicines. Other disorders require the medical attention of a gastroenterologist:
