Two Barnes-Jewish Hospital departments rise to the top in an annual analysis of patient satisfaction. The Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Orthopedic Center in Chesterfield, and the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Heart & Vascular Center’s Cardiac Surgery 7200 received Top Performer awards from Professional Research Consultants (PRC), Inc.

The PRC National Excellence in Healthcare Awards recognize healthcare organizations that have excelled in creating excellent experiences for patients, as well as making their organizations a better place to work and practice medicine.

The Orthopedic Center and Heart & Vascular Center consistently received 5-star awards from PRC through the years, but the Top Performer honor is a first for each team. In fact, the Orthopedic Center outscored all outpatient surgery centers and Cardiac Surgery 7200 outranked all inpatient cardiac units in the PRC database.

“Our staff does an excellent job of making the patient feel at ease from the first pre-op phone call to the call we make after surgery,” says Tricia Prinsen, RN, manager of the Orthopedic Center post-anesthesia care unit. “We start educating the patient the first time we speak with them and continue to teach them how to get the best outcomes after surgery. We provide thorough explanations and treat each patient with respect, as we would our own loved ones.”

Sean Rodriguez, chief experience officer at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, presented the Orthopedic Center team with the award. “This is quite an achievement, given that they are ranked on one of the most competitive norm groups in the PRC national database. This is a team that truly provides the best care possible and is completely engaged in exceptional patient outcomes,” said Rodriguez.

The Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Orthopedic Center in Chesterfield is an outpatient facility exclusively dedicated to the care of the orthopedic patients. This collaboration houses orthopedic specialists, imaging, outpatient surgery and rehabilitation in a single location.

The Heart & Vascular Center team is not new to providing exceptional patient satisfaction as it is renowned for its excellent patient outcomes, which surpass national standards. “Our staff in cardio-thoracic surgery take great pride in the excellent care we provide our patients, and I am very proud of them for achieving this prestigious award,” says Jody Gordon, BSN, RN, MS, clinical nurse manager of the Heart & Vascular Center’s cardiac surgery 7200. “The teamwork, positivity, and compassion the staff exhibits on a daily basis is inspiring. Providing excellent care for our patients is what we are all about.”

The hospital contracts with PRC to get feedback from patients on their experiences through confidential surveys. In addition to the Top Performer awards, Barnes-Jewish Hospital received six 5-Star awards from PRC. Departments earning 5-star awards include:

Cardio Thoracic – 5200
Inpatient Medicinal Services – 13100
Cardiac Diagnostic Lab/Nuclear Medicine
Siteman Counseling Services
Pheresis Center
Outpatient Surgery CAM – Orthopedics
