Lung Transplant

At the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Transplant Center, our lung transplant program is one of the oldest and most experienced in the world. Our specialists have performed more than 1,800 transplants in adults since the program began in 1988.

We have also pioneered surgical approaches to lung transplant that are now standard worldwide. Moreover, our lung transplant program is part of a pulmonary disease program that U.S. News & World Report ranked among the best in the country.

When you or a loved one is in need of a lung transplant, our long-standing expertise ensures you receive the most advanced and personalized care possible along with some of the best outcomes in the nation.

Lung Transplant at Barnes-Jewish: Why Choose Us?

We provide comprehensive treatment plans for people needing a lung transplant, including those with interstitial lung disease, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, and pulmonary hypertension. We also offer lung transplant to higher risk patients who may have been turned down elsewhere.

Regardless of the condition leading to your need for a lung transplant, our goal is for you to regain your health. We help ensure that you return to your daily activities and achieve an excellent quality of life. The many strengths of our lung transplant program help us achieve this goal:

  • Outstanding short- and long-term outcomes: We have short- and long-term lung transplant survival rates consistently above national averages. We are able to achieve these high rates despite offering the procedure to people who are considered high risk for having surgery.
  • Wait times below the national average: Patients typically receive a transplant in three months, about one month shorter than the national average. We work closely with our local organ procurement organization (OPO), Mid-America Transplant. Their doctors and nurses work to increase the number of available organs and the chance they can be transplanted, resulting in shorter wait times.
  • Comprehensive, team-based care throughout the transplant process: We offer comprehensive care and support every step of the way: Throughout the referral and evaluation process, during the waiting period, during and after surgery, and as you return to your daily activities. Your entire lung transplant team is solely focused on lung transplant care.
  • Access to research: Our internationally recognized Washington University physician partners conduct basic, translational and clinical research to improve patient care. They have developed basic research tools that are the standard for lung transplant research worldwide. As a result, our partnership with Washington University provides you with access to the latest advances in lung transplantation.
