Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. According to the American Stroke Association, approximately 795,000 people each year experience a new or recurrent stroke.
World-Class Stroke Care
The Barnes-Jewish & Washington University Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center is St. Louis’ choice for world-class stroke care. Our acute stroke care team provides some of the fastest critical care for stroke patients in the country. This rapid and accurate diagnosis and treatment means a greater chance for patients to survive stroke, prevent long-term brain damage and shorten recovery time.
Our commitment to and success in improving care for stroke patients is recognized by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. Barnes-Jewish Hospital is named on their Target: Stroke honor roll, a distinction granted to less than 1 percent of all acute care hospitals in the U.S. This award recognizes the outstanding and comprehensive care provided to stroke patients and the commitment by Barnes-Jewish & Washington University to provide the best stroke care in the area.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital also earned the American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Award. The Get with the Guidelines program recognizes hospitals that meet or exceed nationally accepted standards and recommendations of stroke care.
Comprehensive Stroke Care Excellence
The Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center is a national leader in clinical care and research for patients with acute ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, as well as the disorders of the blood vessels of the brain that cause these problems. We offer our patients unique capabilities that span the entire process of care, from first responders and diagnosis through treatment and rehabilitation.
Regional Stroke Network
While the Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center provides the highest level of stroke care available, when time is of the essence, not all patients in the region or state can travel here fast enough to receive the critical care they need.
As part of our commitment to making sure patients have the best acute stroke care possible, we created the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital Stroke Network . The Stroke Network creates collaborations between member hospitals and emergency medical responders to streamline and improve stroke care, regardless of where a patient is located.
If you suspect stroke, call 9-1-1 to activate rapid response services and transport to a Stroke Network hospital.
