Palliative Care FAQ

Where is care provided? Palliative Care Services are available for inpatients and their family members at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Your doctor can request a consult with us while you are in the hospital.

Outpatients who are currently within the BJC HealthCare system may receive palliative care services at our Palliative Care Clinic. To set up an outpatient appointment, your physician must submit a referral.

Who is appropriate for Palliative Care? Palliative care is for patients and families facing life-limiting disease, at any point in the disease process.

Is palliative care similar to hospice care? Both palliative care and hospice care focus on pain and symptom management and quality of life issues. Hospice is reserved for patients with a life-expectancy of 6 months or less; Palliative Care, however, may be provided at any point after the diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, and regardless of the need for other therapies.

Does insurance cover palliative care services? Most insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid, covers Palliative Care services provided in the hospital.
