In keeping with Barnes-Jewish Hospital's mission to improve the health of communities the hospital serves, members of the trauma team also provide community outreach programs to promote trauma awareness and injury prevention.
Stop the Bleed
Being prepared to act as an immediate responder and save a life in our every day lives is becoming increasingly important. In this class, you will learn how to identify life threatening bleeding and techniques of how to address the bleeding. After the classroom instruction, you will have the opportunity for a hands-on experience of tourniquet application and wound packing.

THINKFIRST
Barnes-Jewish Hospital Trauma Services represent the St. Louis chapter for the National Injury Prevention Program called Think First. ThinkFirst is a non-profit organization designed to promote brain and spinal cord injury prevention awareness. ThinkFirst is a dramatic program that takes a serious look at risk-taking activities through the eyes of other young people who have suffered brain or spinal cord injuries. In addition, health educators teach the students about the anatomy of the brain, spinal cord and central nervous system.
SEAT BELT SAFETY CAMPAIGN
Held annually at various locations throughout the Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University Campus. Education is provided throughout hospital lobbies on seat belt safety.
PROJECT GUNS
Barnes-Jewish Hospital partners with the Family Court of St. Louis City and County to give juveniles that have been arrested for gun possession an idea of what happens to them should they be shot. Along with the presentation, the teens can view some equipment used on patients and learn how it will affect them if shot. The program shows the physical and emotional side of a gun shot wound and how devastating it can be to the victim and their family. The purpose of this program is to get their attention with graphic pictures, stories and video.
FALL PREVENTION
The program addresses driving safely, fall prevention, and fire safety for the senior adult. The goal is to assist the senior in adjusting their home and routines to improve safety both in and out of the home.
