ST. LOUIS - Barnes-Jewish Hospital has been honored by the American Stroke Association/American Heart Association with the Get With The Guidelines–Stroke (GWTG–Stroke) Honor Roll-Elite Plus Quality Achievement Award.
The additional recognition to the GOLD PLUS Achievement award credits Barnes-Jewish Hospital and its Washington University physician partners for their commitment and success in treating stroke patients. To achieve Honor Roll Elite Plus status, Barnes-Jewish Hospital must meet the target of administering the clot-busting drug tPA to at least 75% of ischemic stroke patients within 60 minutes of their arrival in the emergency department and at least 50% of patients within 45 minutes. The current average “door-to-needle” time for giving tPA at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is 27 minutes.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital is one of three in the state of Missouri to be certified by The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, recognized for treating the most complex strokes and aneurysms. It’s known for having among the nation's best door-to-needle times and is also recognized for pioneering the later administration of tPA using precise neuroimaging.
“This is just another indication of the outstanding and timely care Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University physicians provide to patients,” said Andria Ford, MD, a Washington University neurologist at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. “With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and this award demonstrates our commitment to ensuring patients receive care that goes beyond nationally-respected clinical guidelines.
These quality measures are designed to help hospital teams provide the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients.
Studies have shown that when hospitals consistently follow Get With The Guidelines quality improvement measures, it can reduce length of stay, 30-day readmission rates and disparities in care, according to the Get With The Guidelines steering committee.
