ST. LOUIS - William C. Chapman, MD, FACS has been named as the Eugene M. Bricker Chair of Surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Chapman is chief of the division of general surgery and section of transplantation and the surgical director of the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital Transplant Center program. Dr. Chapman was recruited to Washington University as professor and chief of the section of abdominal transplantation in 2002. In 2009, he was named surgical director of the newly established Transplant Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

The Eugene M. Bricker endowed chair was established by the Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital in memory of Dr. Eugene M. Bricker, a brilliant surgeon and renowned professor of surgery whose medical career at Barnes-Jewish and Washington University School of Medicine spanned more than 60 years. Hundreds of medical students trained under Dr. Bricker, who is remembered as a compassionate teacher and role model.

In his remarks at the installation ceremony on July 25, Rich Liekweg, president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital, recognized the extraordinary partnership between Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the Washington University School of Medicine. He emphasized that through this partnership, every effort is made to provide patient care that reflects our status as national leaders in medicine. Liekweg went on to state that few people have embodied that level of care better than Dr. Chapman and Dr. Bricker, and recognized Dr. Chapman’s significant contributions to the field of transplant surgery.

Larry Shapiro, MD, dean of the Washington University School of Medicine, praised Dr. Bricker as both a brilliant surgeon and a professional who was genuinely interested in mentoring his medical students. In extending his congratulations to Dr. Chapman, Dr. Shapiro explained that an endowed chair is the highest academic honor that can be bestowed to recognize faculty members for their deep contributions to the field of medicine.

In accepting the Bricker Chair, Dr. Chapman characterized Dr. Bricker as “a giant in the field of surgery” and expressed gratitude for his years of leadership and dedicated service to the medical center. Dr. Chapman specializes in liver transplantation for adults and children (living donor, living adult donor and adult-to-adult donor), hepatobiliary surgery and liver surgery. Support from the Bricker chair will enable Dr. Chapman to further his research in ischemia reperfusion injury and molecular markers of hepatocellular cancer.

Dr. Chapman is active in many surgical societies and has served as the program chair, secretary, and most recently, president-elect of the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. He currently serves on the editorial board of five major surgical journals and is the treasurer for the Western Surgical Association and chair of the Business Practice Committee of the American Society for Transplant Surgery.
