Barnes-Jewish Hospital has been reverified as a nationally recognized Level 1 trauma
center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The hospital was initially verified
as an ACS Level 1 in 1996. Every three years, re-evaluation is required to maintain
the verification.
“This distinction is the gold standard for trauma centers. Achieving this recognition
means a great deal to us at Barnes-Jewish and reflects our commitment with
Washington University School of Medicine to be national leaders in medicine and
the patient experience,” says Julie Nash, RN, manager of trauma and acute care services.
The ACS Consultation/Verification Program is designed to assist hospitals in the
evaluation and improvement of trauma care and provide objective, external review
of institutional capability and performance. These functions are accomplished
by an on-site review of the hospital by a peer review team experienced in the field
of trauma care. The team assesses commitment, readiness, resources, policies, patient
care, performance improvement and other relevant features of the program as outlined
in Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient: 2006 document.
