A severe heart attack known as a STEMI (ST Elevation Acute Myocardial Infarction) occurs when an artery is completely blocked by a blood clot. Without immediate intervention top open the blocked artery, areas of the heart muscle begin to die. The Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Heart & Vascular Center team begins care for STEMI patients even before their arrival, coordinating with EMS teams for maximum speed and minimum delay.
