When Darren's heart was failing, doctors implanted a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) in his heart to help his heart pump until he could have a heart transplant.

Darren recalled waking up after the heart transplant and hearing his new heart for the first time.

“I received the best care anyone could ever want,” he said. “The skill level of the surgeons is hard to explain … they saved my life. The doctors and nurses saved my life with an LVAD and they gave me a new life with a heart transplant.”
