Know before you go

Please note that we are seeing high patient volumes in the emergency department. This may result in longer wait times. Please anticipate that your trip could last a considerable amount of time.

For mild-to moderate symptoms and minor injuries, patients can consider alternative options for care such as BJC Convenient Care or Virtual Care. Additionally, patients can seek an appointment with a primary care physician. We appreciate your patience.

About your wait time

You deserve extraordinary care and we want to treat you as quickly as possible. We understand that one of the most stressful situations is sitting in an emergency department waiting room while you or someone you love needs treatment.

Reasons for longer wait times may include:

  • A high number of patients are in the emergency department – in the waiting room, exam rooms, and coming in by ambulance.
  • Patients with acute conditions are requiring time-sensitive care.
  • Patients are coming in from helicopters and other facilities.
  • A high number of patients are in the hospital in general.
  • An appropriate area of care needs to be prepared for you.

Additionally, while you are in the emergency department it is important to understand that every patient is in various stages of their care journey. They may be taken to various areas of the emergency department depending on their condition and treatment plan. They also may be asked to sit in the waiting room while awaiting test results or to be taken for additional treatment.

Again, thank you for your patience. Our team will work to keep you updated after you arrive. At any time, if you have worsening symptoms, questions or concerns, notify a member of our team.

As a level 1 trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, and leading heart attack care site, we are at the tip of the spear when it comes to providing emergency care for the St Louis region.

The Emergency Department at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is the largest in Missouri, in a 52,000-square-foot facility with a total of 70 beds. We have five separate nursing stations, which help improve communication between caregivers, physicians, and family members.

  • The Emergency Department was built to exceed the standards for earthquake safety and is designed to be functional after an earthquake.

  • Decontamination units, both inside and outside, with separate septic systems are available for biological or chemical decontamination needs.

  • Non-emergent ambulance traffic accesses the building through the new sub-surface garage, eliminating ambulance-parking issues.

  • A larger, covered ambulance bay increases patient privacy while easing EMS congestion.

  • Convenient patient/visitor parking is available in the subsurface garage directly beneath the building.

  • Computerized triage, tracking, order entry and documentation systems allow for an efficient flow of information.
